Vingroup opens new AI research institute

Giant IT-real-estate-manufacturing-retail conglomerate Vingroup on April 17 opened VinAI Research, a research institute focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) with the goal of elevating Vietnam’s role in the AI world.

The institute will study basic AI science applications in image and video processing, linguistic and voice recognition and user interaction, according to Vingroup.

It will give priority to the hottest topics and issues in Vietnam and the world.

The institute also plans to train top AI specialists for Vingroup and Vietnam in general, fostering young talents for the future and transferring AI technologies to the parent company and partners.

The new AI research centre will be chaired by Dr Bui Hai Hung, former senior AI expert for Google and member of the editorial board at Artificial Intelligence magazine.

Hung has had nearly 100 studies published in well-known IT magazines, and has nearly 10 invention certificates issued by the US agencies.

The establishment of VinAI Research, which is managed by Vingroup’s technology arm VinTech, is the group’s next step to upgrade its business to an international level in technology, services and industrial fields.

Vingroup has opened several technology-focused units such as the IT sub-business VinTech, the Big Data Research Institute and the Vingroup Innovation Fund.
