Developing 5G - the next generation of mobile internet connectivity – is of significance to the growth of Vietnam and other ASEAN countries, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam stated at the first ASEAN Conference on 5G in Hanoi on March 22.

Dam noted that initial steps to develop a new technology are always challenging. Therefore, the government should take the initiative in supporting enterprises to minimize risks.

He stressed the need to boost innovation and at the same time seek measures to address shortcomings related to information security and safety.

The Deputy PM suggested participating delegates discuss towards a suitable roadmap to the development of 5G, including identifying opportunities and challenges, and putting forward solutions.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on March 21, Minister of Information and Communication (MIC) Nguyen Manh Hung said that 5G will be the most important part of the infrastructure for the digital economy thanks to its greater bandwidth, higher speeds and lower latency.

He stated that the digital economy is creating new opportunities, noting that new technologies will enable better connectivity between supply chains, and reduce logistics and business costs.

According to the minister, Vietnam will be one of the first countries in the world to roll out 5G and is willing to cooperate with the ASEAN countries to establish joint ventures and factories to make IT equipment.

The ASEAN Conference on 5G took place in Hanoi on March 21-22, during which regional regulators and experts will discuss 5G development policies and strategies, as well as challenges in building a 5G-based ecosystem.

The event was jointly held by the MIC, the Vietnam Internet Association and the International Data Group (IDG).
