Deputy Minister of Public Security Lieutenant General Le Quoc Hung hosted a meeting with Dutch Ambassador to Vietnam Kees van Baar on the morning of May 24th, 2024, in Hanoi.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung affirmed that Vietnam always attaches great importance to the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (commonly known as the United Nations Convention against Torture), one of nine core international human rights treaties adopted by the United Nations.
Over the past time, the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam had closely coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in effectively implementing the UN Convention against Torture for the 2015 – 2017 period and 2018 – 2020 period, focusing on raising awareness for many officials of ministries and branches, especially the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, of respecting and exercising the rights of people who are at risk of torture, forced confession or corporal punishment, especially detainees, prisoners and teenagers at reformatories.
Thanks to the close cooperation between the two sides, several postive results have been achieved, demonstrating Vietnam's efforts and determination to effectively implement this Convention.
At the end of the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung and Ambassador Kees van Baar signed a MOU on cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in implementing the UN Convention against Torture for the 2024 – 2026 period, aiming to further promote bilateral cooperation in the implementation of this Convention in the coming time.
The signing of the MOU is of great significance, showing good practical results of cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in the field of human rights, contributing to strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
