2017 campaign to counter fake money launched

PSNews-The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) of Vietnam and the Ministry of State Security (MSS) of China launch an intensive campaign in 2017 to counter crimes related to counterfeit money in Vietnam and China, in Da Nang on June 2.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Major General Nguyen Hung Linh, Director of the Department of Financial and Monetary Security. The Chinese delegation was headed by Mr. Zhang Canhui, Deputy Director of the Bureau for Investigation of Economic Crime.

According to a report by the MPS of Vietnam, in 2016, the banking system, treasury and credit institutions across the country detected and seized 25,774 counterfeits of the Vietnamese currency, totaling VND 4,372 billion (a rise of 11.6% from the same period last year). The counterfeits were mainly imitations of Vietnamese polymer notes. At the same time, Vietnam’s Police Force had prosecuted and investigated 46 cases of storing, transporting, circulating counterfeit money, arrested 75 suspects and seized 3,820 billion of fake money.

At the meeting, representatives of the two sides delivered speeches on prevention and fight against counterfeit money-related crimes, a common concern of many countries in the region and in the world, including Vietnam and China. The typical cases show that counterfeit money lines often involve Vietnamese and Chinese citizens, who are closely connected. They mainly buy counterfeit money in China and then transport the counterfeit money to Vietnam for trading.

To effectively combat this type of crime in the coming time, the two sides have agreed to launch the campaign. Accordingly, both sides will strengthen coordination, exchange of information and related situations to improve the effectiveness of the fight against the crime.

The Steering Committees of the two sides are expected to hold periodic meetings to discuss the situation, study and discuss measures to promote cooperation in the intensive period; and establish a hotline between the two parties to quickly exchange information in the case of high requirement.
