Officer killed while performing duty posthumously promoted

General To Lam, Politburo member, Minister of Public Security issued a decision on July 10 to posthumously promote officer Van Yen (born in 1984), Deputy Chief of the Khanh Thanh Commune Police Post, Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province from Senior Lieutenant to Captain, who died while his duty.

The rank promotion came into effect on July 1, 2022.

On June 25, 2022, while patrolling, a working team of the Khanh Thanh Commune Police Post detected Cao Thi Thanh Nh. (born in 2007, residing in Khanh Thanh commune) riding a motorbike without a license plate.

The police team stopped her and temporarily seized the violating vehicle in accordance with the law.

On the afternoon of July 9, the offender’s boyfriend named Ho Minh Dat, born in 2002, residing in Bac Song Giang hamlet, Khanh Trung commune, surreptitiously broke into the police building in Khanh Thanh commune to steal the motorbikes as evidence of the violation.

After that, Deputy Chief of the Khanh Thanh Commune Police Post Senior Lieutenant Hoang Van Yen leading some policemen went to Dat's house to retake the motorbike.

While the group of policemen was taking the motorbike past the Khanh Thanh Commune Health Station, Ho Minh Dat, driving another motorbike, thrust officer Yen with a sharp pointed knife from behind and then ran away.

Due to the serious injury, officer Yen died when he was taken to the Khanh Vinh District Medical Center on the night of July 9.

The murderer was arrested on July 7 while hiding in his sister’s home. On the same day, the Police Investigation Agency under the Khanh Hoa Provincial Police Department prosecuted Ho Minh Dat for theft and murder.

Reportedly, officer Yen’s family have various difficulties in life. His father died in 2017 while his mother is old and his wife is jobless.
