Vietnam, Sweden seek to expand judicial assistance and law enforcement cooperation

PSNews - As a member of a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh officially visiting the Kingdom of Sweden, Deputy Minister of Public Security Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Long had a meeting with Swedish Deputy Minister of Justice to discuss collaboration between the two sides in judicial affairs and transnational crime prevention, on June 13, 2025.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Long and Deputy Minister Charlotte Kugelberg agreed that, since the establishment of Vietnam – Sweden diplomatic relations in 1969, the two countries have developed and maintained a deep friendship and cooperation with significant achievements in various fields.

As part of the bilateral relations, the law enforcement cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and Swedish law enforcement agencies has witnessed positive developments in bilateral cooperation, particularly since the signing of the Agreement on Crime Prevention and Control in 2013.

On the basis of the established legal framework, the two sides have regularly exchanged crime information, jointly verified and handled criminal cases involving citizens of each country, and effectively carried out extradition activities through bilateral diplomatic channels and international cooperation mechanisms under the Interpol framework.

In addition, the two sides have closely coordinated to ensure the security and safety of each country's citizens and businesses in the other country.

To further strengthen cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Swedish Ministry of Justice, the two sides agreed to promote delegation exchanges at all levels to enhance mutual understanding, as well as to comprehend each other’s needs, strengths and potential, in order to explore opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in a more substantive and effective manner.

The two sides also consented to consider the negotiation and signing of such cooperation documents as a Memorandum of Understanding between the two ministries, an Agreement on Extradition and an Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons, contributing to strengthening a legal foundation for the two sides to expand their comprehensive cooperation.

The two Deputy Ministers reached consensus on expanding cooperation in the field of forensic science, as well as in combating various types of crime, such as drug-related offenses and cybercrime.

They also agreed to strengthen coordination in ensuring security and safety and create favorable conditions for each country’s citizens who are lawfully living, working, doing business and traveling in the other’s territory.

For her part, Deputy Minister Charlotte Kugelberg highly appreciated the effort of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam to fostering international cooperation in the fields of judicial assistance and transnational crime prevention. She also applauded the positive cooperation results achieved by the Swedish law enforcement agencies and their Vietnamese counterparts.

The Swedish Deputy Minister of Justice said that the Swedish side is willing to support Vietnam in training personnel for United Nations peacekeeping operations, and that leaders of the Swedish Ministry of Justice are planning to pay a visit to the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in the near future to further advance bilateral cooperation.
