Vietnam's MPS to send police officers to UN's peacekeeping missions

PSNews - Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Thanh, Deputy Minister of Public Security on May 10 received Mr. Peter Due, Director of Asia and Pacific Division of the UN Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Thanh stated that, since Vietnam became the 149th member of the UN in 1977, the country has actively contributed to the drafting of strategies and action programs of the UN.

Deputy Minister Thanh said that Vietnam always desires to contribute more to maintaining peace and security for the world. The country is standing for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council in 2020-2021 term.

According to Thanh, Vietnam's Ministry of Defense since 2014 has sent a number of officers to take part in UN peacekeeping activities in the two UN Peacekeeping Missions in South Sudan and Central African Republic.

The Ministry of Public Security will also soon assign police officers to join this force.

Deputy Minister Thanh added that Vietnam's Ministry of Defense has shared with the Ministry of Public Security many experiences regarding UN peacekeeping operations.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Security also actively learns experiences from the countries that have sent police forces to UN peacekeeping missions, and well studies the needs and standards of the UN for police forces at UN peacekeeping missions.

The Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Public Security urged the head of the Asia and Pacific Division of the UN Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations to further support Vietnam in training professional skills, foreign languages and procedures of deployment to peacekeeping missions for Vietnamese police officers.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Thanh affirmed that Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security always ensure security and safety for UN re-offices and staff as well as creates favorable conditions for UN activities in Vietnam.

The Ministry has also been cooperating effectively with UN agencies in combating and preventing crimes, especially drug-related crime, terrorism, organized transnational crime, contributing to ensuring security and safety in the region and the world.

Mr. Peter Due, for his part, thanked Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Thanh for the warm reception. Mr. Peter Due affirmed, in his position, he will continue to promote cooperation between Vietnam and the UN in general and between Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security and UN agencies in particular for more effectiveness.
