Elders contributing to security and order at Ka Tang village

PSNews -  Although life is difficult here, local people, especially elders in Ka Tang village still actively participate in maintaining security and order in the area.

Ka Tang village is located in the center of Lao Bao town (Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri), and isalso home to the Van Kieu ethnic minority, representing 90% of the population.
Most of people living in Ka Tang village are farmers but some earn their living at the Lao Bao border gate all day, doing whatever labor jobs they are hired.

In spite of difficulty in life and hardship at work, Ka Tang villagers are aware of the importance of social security and order in the border area. Local people are always ready to support the local authorities and armed forces in ensuring local security and order.

The story about elderly Ho Thi No could in part explain why the border are can always be peaceful and secure.

In late 1962, Lao Bao was a hot battlefield, experiencing the enemy’s fierce bombardment. In early 1963, the Vietnamese revolutionary force moved local elders and children to the North.

She started studying at the National Ethnic School in Hanoi. In 1969, she was mature and volunteered to go to the South to join the national resistance war. When the war was ended, she came back to Lao Bao and got married to Ho Van Cong, a war veteran. Together with local people, the young couple started building a new life and their homeland.

When they had children, they taught them how to became good people, contributing to protect the homeland.

Dad Cong and mom No are outstanding examples of local people’s contribution to ensuring security and order in Ka Tang village. Since they are in their 80s, they cannot do much but still contribute to the development of village by teaching young generation about what is right and wrong, said Colonel Ta Quang Hau, head of the Lao Bao International Border Station.

He noted that although the Lao Bao border gate is a complicated area, but residents of Ka Tang village have never violated the law.

Nguyen Huu Dung, Chairman of the Lao Bao Town People’s Committee said: Over the past years, Ka Tang village has remained as a typical model of security and order, contributing to promoting village’s socio-economy, tradition and culture.

Ka Tang village has 190 households with 1,000 residents. Most local people live on argo-forestry production activities but some working as rickshaw pullers at the Lao Bao International Border Gate.

However, because the local irrigation system has not been invested in synchronously, most forest land is infertile, barren and difficult to grow crops, which makes local people work hard but still earn low incomes.

"The Resolution of the Lao Bao Town People's Council on socio-economic development and security and defense in the period 2015-2020 says that we should pay more attention to the role of elders, heads of villages and good examples among residents. Good examples like Cong and No elders are the firm support for villagers in life and also for social order, security and defense in the border area," Dung stressed.
