On-duty traffic police officer dies while chasing suspect

PSNews – Captain Chu Quang Sang, a traffic police officer of the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Provincial Police Department, drew his last breath due to his serious injuries hit by a suspect’s care while doing his duty on road.

At 8 am on April 17, Huynh Van Chung (born in 1976, residing at Ho Chi Minh City) was driving a pickup truck with its licensed plate number 51C-95229 on Highway No.51 from Ho Chi Minh City to Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province. The vehicle was running at 83 km/h, very much exceeding the speed limit.

At that time, a traffic police team under the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Traffic Police Division was patrolling on the Highway No51 near the intersection of Phu My Fertilizer Plant Apartment Building. The traffic police officers then signaled to stop the vehicle but the driver drove the vehicle away at a high speed and bypassed the traffic lights twice.

Captain Chu Quang Sang and a mobile police officer rode a motorbike to chase the suspect vehicle. When the two policemen were trying to overtake the vehicle, the driver deliberately pressed the motorbike into the hard median divider, preventing the motorbike from surpassing.

At the Cai Mep junction, the runaway vehicle intentionally hit the police’s motorbike. Captain Sang and his colleague then fell down the road.

His colleagues and local people took Captain Chu Quang Sang to Ba Ria Hospital, but due to serious injuries, he could not last out the same day.

On April 18, leaders of the Ba Ria – Vung Tau Provincial Police Department, colleagues of Captain Chu Quang Sang and his friends as well as locals came to his house in Nhan Phuoc Ward, Xuyen Moc Commune, Xuyen Moc District to pay tribute to him and give condolences to his family.

According to the local police, relevant police units are investigating the case.

The driver of the vehicle named Huynh Van Chung was then arrested who had signs of mental illness. The suspect was first taken to the Provincial Mental Hospital for examination.
