Phu Quoc police help people overcome floods

PSNews - Police officers and soldiers of the Phu Quoc District Police Station, Kien Giang province, joined local people in overcoming aftermath of the recent flooding.

Heavy rains over the past days have caused great damage to the island district of Phu Quoc, Kien Giang province. Although the natural disasters have gone away, local police officers are still working hard to help locals overcome the consequences.

In recent days, the Phu Quoc District Police Station mobilized maximum forces to coordinate with functional forces and local people to rebuild houses, collect people’s assets, clear solid and mud off roads to restore the local traffic.

According to Phu Quoc district’s Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Rescue, heavy rain over the past few days has left around 8,424 houses flooded, 24 others destroyed or without roofs and a large area of crop devastated. The total damage was estimated at over 107 billion VND (4.6 million USD).

Some 63 km of roads were under 0.7-2 metres of water. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the district. The district authority has mobilized local rescue teams and soldiers to evacuate nearly 2,000 people. Thousands of free meals have been supplied for households who have been affected by flooding.

Phu Quoc has been battered by continuous heavy rains since August 2. The rainfall recorded the past week by the province's Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting was 1,100 mm, a record.

The total rainfall in the island from August 2 to August 9 was more than 1,000mm. On August 9 alone, the rainfall reached 335mm, higher than the total rainfall of 1997 which was 327mm. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the district.
