Vietnam appreciates UN’s cooperation in preventing and combating drug crimes

Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong highlighted that Vietnam appreciated the support from the UNODC for Vietnam in prevention and combat of crimes in country, particularly drug-related crimes, via the effective implementation of the agreement on cooperation in drug prevention and fight in the Mekong sub-region.

Deputy Minister Vuong also emphasized that as the world has experienced political, economic and social changes in recent years, drug-related crimes have become complicated with the appearance of new types of drugs, posing more challenges and difficulties to Vietnam in the fight against transnational drug crimes.

He noted that the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) of Vietnam always attaches much importance to promoting effective coordination with the UNODC, and affirmed that the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security has strong determination, will and commitment to team up with the UNODC to prevent and fight drug crimes. He emphasized that Vietnam has been, and will always be an active and responsible member, seriously implement its commitments and agreements with the UNODC and other members in drug prevention and control in the region and in the world.

Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong also asked the UNODC to provide further technical support and equipment for Vietnam, and promote operations of Border Liaison Offices.

For his part, Douglas thanked Deputy Minister Vuong for the reception and spoke highly of Vietnam’s initiatives and preparations for the Ministerial Conference on enhancing the efficiency of cooperation in combating transnational drug crimes.

He also agreed that the complex situation of drug crimes in the region has posed various challenges to the law enforcement agencies and required more efforts to counter this type of crime.

He suggested ASEAN members, including Vietnam, promote cooperation in fight against drug-related crimes, particularly improving the effectiveness and efficiency of cross-border cooperation between and among law enforcement forces of regional countries. He also committed to further coordinate with Vietnam and support Vietnam as the ASEAN Chair in 2020.
