Vietnam, U.S. enhance security and law enforcement cooperation

Deputy Minister of Public Security of Vietnam Senior Lieutenant General Le Quoc Hung and U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Chris Landberg co-chaired the 2nd Vietnam–U.S. Security and Law Enforcement Dialogue on September 5 in Washington, D.C.

Deputy Minister of Public Security of Vietnam Senior Lieutenant General Le Quoc Hung and U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Chris Landberg co-chaired the 2nd Vietnam–U.S. Security and Law Enforcement Dialogue on September 5 in Washington, D.C.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyen Quoc Dung attended the dialogue.

At the event, both sides spoke highly of the outcomes of the first Vietnam–U.S. Security and Law Enforcement Dialogue, held in Hanoi in July 2024, as well as the effective implementation of the commitments and agreed contents since then.

Within the framework of the dialogue, the competent agencies of both sides discussed a wide range of regional security and transnational organized crime issues, including maritime security, supply chain security, money laundering and counterterrorism, as well as cooperation in combating narcotics, cybercrime, human trafficking, illegal immigration and financial crimes.

The two sides also discussed cooperation priorities to enhance law enforcement and criminal justice capacity and considered mechanisms to broaden collaboration in addressing emerging challenges from transnational crime, particularly online scams affecting citizens and businesses in both countries.

In his concluding remarks, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung highly appreciated the efforts of agencies of both countries in coordinating the organization and effective implementation of the Vietnam–U.S. Security and Law Enforcement Dialogue mechanism. 

He suggested that the competent agencies of the two countries continue to maintain regular exchanges on issues of mutual concern and agreed contents in the coming time, in order to further promote security and law enforcement cooperation, commensurate with the Vietnam–U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

As part of his working visit to the U.S., Deputy Minister Le Quoc Hung also held meetings with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the U.S. Department of State and the Asia Group.

At these meetings, the Deputy Minister appreciated the results of cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security and its U.S. partners over the past years, affirming that these achievements have made law enforcement cooperation an important component of the Vietnam–U.S. bilateral relationship. 

He showed consensus on the U.S. side’s ideas and suggested that both sides continue to strengthen cooperation, further enhance information exchange, promptly handle issues of particular concern and effectively implement other agreed areas of cooperation in the time ahead.
